What a Difference TRIM Makes »
Nearly a year ago I revived my Macbook ‘07 with a SSD. It went from dog slow to pretty speedy. The downside however was that performance would degrade over time since Snow Leopard did not support the TRIM feature to keep the SSD in shape.
Now, a year later, the good news is; Trim support has been added to Snow Leopard. The bad news; It's only enabled on SSDs sold by Apple, excluding my third party SSD. But luckily the Mac community is full of hackers and some of them where facing the same problem. Thus “TRIM Enabler” was released.
Because the tool modifies a crucial system file I first ran a full backup. After a quick reboot of 10 seconds all is well. Spotlight is yet again lightning fast and the 10% of free space I lost over the year has been reclaimed. So far, so good.
